Prague lets Prague Symphony Orchestra take care of Sts. Simon and Jude Church

3/8/2021

The church located in Prague’s Old Town, which enjoys protection as a historic monument, will continue to serve cultural purposes. The City of Prague acquired the church last year and now is handing it over to its own organization complete with the original furniture.

“Transferring the church to the Prague Symphony Orchestra is the final steps in the acquisition process of this unique building. It was an extremely time-consuming transaction in which we managed to negotiate a significant discount from the asking price. The city acquired not just a church building but a unique monument in the city center that will serve the citizens, becoming the headquarters of Prague Symphony Orchestra and a concert venue. Besides, I believe that this represents an exemplary approach to care for a former church building, as comparted, e.g., with the former St. Michael church nearby, which was converted into a music club and a brothel,” says City Councilor Jan Chabr.

At its session on Monday, Prague City Council approved an amended charter of the Prague Symphony Orchestra, the most significant change being the transfer of the Church of Sts. Simon and Jude to the body including an adjacent plot of land.
